JCAM honors those that served

Senator Julius Ansel

1908-1965

King Solomon, Centre Street, West Roxbuty MA

Julius Ansel was a Vilnius-born, charismatic American-Jewish politician. Immigrating to the United States from Russia at the age of two, Julius grew up in Dorchester. Ansel’s public service notably began with his enlistment in the United States military during World War II. Following his activity as a soldier, he became active in city politics. Ansel was a Boston City council member from 1948-1951. Then, from 1953-1955 and 1959-1965, Ansel represented Ward 14 in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Though he lost the Boston mayoral race in 1963 to Irish candidate, John Collins, Ansel went on to serve in the Massachusetts Senate in 1965.

As an experienced local politician, Ansel knew it was strategically necessary to gain the attention of Ward 14 residents in West Roxbury. G&G Delicatessen on Blue Hill Avenue was a popular place for political activity and exposure. Ansel could often be found at the delicatessen, engaging with constituents. According to city residents, he was a “good orator” and managed to sweep a crowd off its feet.
In 1965, Senator Ansel died suddenly of a heart attack. He is buried in King Solomon Memorial Park on Centre Street in West Roxbury. There were a large number of people who attended Ansel’s funeral, due to his political influence and impact in Boston and beyond. Upon hearing of the sudden loss of the senator, President Lyndon B. Johnson sent his late wife, Lillian Ansel Levenson, a message naming him a dutiful “public servant.” During this time of urban development and demographic changes in Boston, Julius Ansel represented his community on the political stage.

Always a giving person, Ira dedicated time and money to starting and continuing the project of cemetery restoration. He prioritized cleaning up the grounds, finding families, and establishing an endowment for future perpetual care. Ira’s strong focus on caring for the memories of those interred manifested in his relentless restoration efforts.

Lindwood Memorial Park,
Randolph MA

Lt. Stanley J. Sage was born on December 14, 1923, and enlisted in the United States Air Corps in 1943. According to military records, he was a reservist and earned an Air Medal award during his service. A resident of Mattapan (Dorchester), Massachusetts, Lt. Sage attended Northeastern University for one year prior to his military service. His father, David, worked as a linotype operator, and Rose, his mother, was reportedly a homemaker. Lt. Sage is a World War II veteran and is buried in Lindwood Memorial Park in Randolph, Massachusetts.

Captain Horace R. Falk

Crawford St., West Roxbury MA

Captain Horace Raphael Falk, of Leominster, Massachusetts, served in the United States Air Force during World War II. While flying over Northern Honshu, Japan as a navigator, he died at age twenty-nine. Falk helped with the military’s work on a navigation device, which the Allied forces made use in war operations.

Barach Margolin

Lindwood Memorial Park,
Randolph MA

Barach Margolin served in the United States Army from 1941 to 1961. Throughout that period, he was a Lieutenant Colonel and served in both World War II and the Korean War. Born in April 1911 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Barach married his wife, Ruth and continued to live in Massachusetts, specifically Dorchester. During his lengthy US Army service, Margolin was a freemason and held an army mason membership. He was part of the Rising Sun No. 1401 Lodge in Kobe, Japan. In 1951, there are records of Captain Margolin’s travels as part of the US Army. Along with other US Army members of higher rank, Margolin was a passenger on Northwest Airlines headed for west coast locations such as Seattle, Washington and Anchorage, Alaska. During World War II, Northwest Airlines flew cargo missions to Canada, Alaska, and the Aleutian Islands. Margolin, a dedicated veteran, died in 1981 and is buried in Lindwood Memorial Cemetery in Randolph, Massachusetts.

Throughout our cemeteries, veterans from many generations are laid to rest.

Their dedication, courage, and commitment to service are an enduring part of their legacy. At JCAM, we are privileged to care for the final resting places of these men and women.
